Maury County Planning Commission Recommends Data Center Moratorium

Maury County leaders are considering a temporary pause on new data center projects while they review whether current zoning rules are adequate for the large-scale facilities being built around the country today. The Maury County Planning Commission recently recommended a moratorium on new data center approvals for up to 12 months, or until updated regulations are in place.
County officials say existing rules were written with smaller facilities in mind and may not address concerns associated with modern large-scale data centers, including water and power demands, noise levels and impacts on surrounding properties. Commissioners are expected to take up the proposed moratorium during their July meeting.

The Family Center Opens Cooling Station, Seeks Volunteers

From The Family Center’s post…
Due to the extreme temperatures over the next few weeks, The Family Center is responding by providing a daytime Cooling Station for our community in need of shelter. Open from 9-3 Monday-Thursday, we have extended our daytime available hours for our unhoused community to take shelter from the extreme heat. This will operate daily through the end of September.
If you are interested in helping, we need volunteers to assist during the day and help us organize our guests for showers, meals, and laundry services. If you have a heart for the homeless, we would invite you to join our team of advocates by emailing [email protected]. Thank you for the support!
Columbia Fire & Rescue Urges Caution After Fireworks-Related Fire
From Columbia Fire & Rescue’s post…
Last night, Columbia Fire & Rescue responded to a fire caused by the improper disposal of fireworks.
With the Fourth of July coming up, we want to remind everyone that fireworks can quickly turn from celebration to emergency. Fires can start from sparks, embers, improper disposal, or fireworks landing near homes, sheds, vehicles, dry grass, or other combustibles.
Please help keep our community safe:
• Use fireworks only in open, clear areas away from structures, vehicles, and dry vegetation.
• Never allow children to handle or light fireworks.
• Keep a water hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Do not relight fireworks that do not go off.
• Soak used fireworks in water before throwing them away.
• Be respectful of neighbors, pets, veterans, and those sensitive to loud noises.
• When in doubt, leave fireworks to the professionals.
We want everyone to enjoy the holiday, but we also want everyone to make it home safely and avoid preventable fires.
Celebrate safely, Columbia.
The crew at Columbia Fire & Rescue also made this humorous but informative video to remind us all to stay safe out there!
