Adient to Close Two Tennessee Plants, Cutting 95 Jobs in Maury County

Two Adient manufacturing plants in Tennessee will permanently close this summer, resulting in job losses for more than 400 workers. The closures were disclosed through WARN notices filed with the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development on April 22 and 23.

The affected facilities, located in Maury and Henderson Counties, will officially close on June 27. Layoffs at the Maury County plant began on April 17, impacting 95 employees. At the Henderson County location, layoffs started April 21, with 320 workers set to lose their jobs.

According to UAW Local 1853 Chapter President John Rutherford, the closures stem from Adient losing its contract with General Motors to supply seats for Cadillac vehicles assembled in Spring Hill. Rutherford said the news came as a surprise even to union leaders, who had just started negotiating a new contract with Adient last month.

In Maury County, the affected employees are represented by UAW Local 1853. The Southern Middle Local Workforce Development Area rapid response team is coordinating support for those workers and the employer. In Henderson County, where employees are not unionized, the Southwest Local Workforce Development Area team is providing similar assistance.

Rutherford noted that UAW is actively working to place displaced workers into new roles at another Spring Hill facility now producing seats for GM vehicles.

Workers seeking support or more information can contact the Dislocated Worker Unit at (615) 253-6355.

Carters Creek “Can Opener” Strikes Again For a Total of 5 Trucks Eaten This Month

The railroad bridge that crosses over Carters Creek Road had it’s busiest month this year so far, claiming 5 trucks with drivers that somehow didn’t read the multiple signs warning of their impending doom. The 10’10” bridge chomped its 5th truck of the month yesterday and was caught on camera here by Brandon Bauer.

The bridge has its very own facebook page that keeps track of all the action…

Closed From 5/5 - 8/1: Baker Road between Bear Creek Pike & North Ridge Road

The City of Columbia announces the closure of Baker Road between Bear Creek Pike and North Ridge Road from Monday, May 5, 2025, to Friday, August 1, 2025, for Phase 1 of a major roadway reconstruction project.

This project will enhance safety and drivability by widening lanes, adding shoulders, and reducing vertical curves, making the road safer for all drivers. Importantly, this project is being fully funded by private development, not taxpayer dollars. As new development occurs in the area, the City continues to prioritize infrastructure enhancements that keep pace with growth—ensuring that improvements are made in a responsible, forward-thinking manner.

“The safety and long-term benefits of this project are essential to accommodate the continued growth and well-being of our community. It should also be noted these traffic enhancements which will result are being paid by the developers of the underlying residential development—minimizing the impact on our taxpayers, while maximizing safety and security of our residents and visitors alike. Much like the Tom J. Hitch Bridge closure, the short term inconveniences and frustration of this project will lead to long term traffic safety and other financial benefits.

The City urges motorists to plan for alternative routes during the closure period and thanks the public in advance for their cooperation. Updates regarding the project’s progress will be shared on the City of Columbia’s official website and social media platforms.
