TDOT to Install Height Sensors at Notorious "Can Opener" Bridge
A box truck collided with a low-clearance bridge on Carters Creek Pike Tuesday morning, an incident captured on camera and highlighting an ongoing issue for Maury County drivers. The bridge, commonly referred to as the "Can Opener," has become notorious for accidents involving oversized vehicles.
The bridge’s clearance is only ten feet and ten inches, leading to frequent collisions that often damage the roofs of trucks attempting to pass underneath. Although the driver involved in Tuesday’s crash was not injured, the incident adds to the growing number of similar events reported each year. Despite multiple warning signs on Carters Creek Pike, the bridge continues to claim dozens of trucks annually.

The Carter’s Creek “Can Opener” claimed another victim on Thursday.
To address the issue, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced plans to install a vehicle clearance measurement system on both sides of the bridge. This new technology aims to better alert drivers of height restrictions and prevent future crashes. However, the installation process may result in temporary traffic delays in the area.
Local drivers have expressed frustration with the recurring accidents, emphasizing that Carters Creek Pike is not well-suited for large trucks due to its narrow design and the availability of alternative routes. The ongoing improvements from TDOT are seen as a necessary step toward improving safety and reducing the frequency of these incidents.
Join the Carter’s Creek Can Opener Facebook group to keep tabs on the bridge - if anything happens, you’ll hear about it there first!
Maury County Public Schools Celebrates Major Milestone with 92% Graduation Rate

Maury County Public Schools (MCPS) has achieved a 92% graduation rate for the 2023-24 academic year, matching Tennessee's record-breaking state average. This marks significant progress for the district, with steady increases from 86% in 2021-22 and 89% in 2022-23.
District leadership credits this milestone to the hard work and dedication of principals, teachers, staff, and students. MCPS remains focused on fostering student success and making a positive impact on the community through high academic standards and continual improvement.
The accomplishment has also garnered recognition from local leaders, who view it as a testament to the school district's efforts and a positive step toward further progress in public education. The success contributes to Tennessee’s overall 92.1% graduation rate for 2023-24, as announced by the Tennessee Department of Education.
