Mule Day Remains on Schedule Despite Severe Weather Concerns

For campers at Maury County Park, the lead-up to Mule Day brought more than just excitement—it also brought severe weather. Heavy rain and strong winds rolled through overnight, forcing many to take shelter. Some, however, stayed behind, watching the storm unfold from their trailers.

One longtime Mule Day participant, who has attended for over a decade, wasn’t surprised by the rough weather. Some rain is a regular occurrence during the event, but this year, it looks like storms could last for several days.

Around midnight on Monday, radar detected rotation near Columbia, prompting law enforcement to advise campers to seek shelter at the nearby high school. Some woke up to the sound of heavy rain just before authorities arrived with the warning. While parts of Columbia, including Trotwood Avenue, saw damage from downed trees and power lines, the campground remained untouched. Local emergency officials reported multiple power outages, but service was restored by Monday afternoon.

Not everyone took shelter. Some campers stayed behind to look after their animals, one mentioning she didn’t want to leave her pregnant horses. They watched the storm from beneath their trailers, relying on their instincts and the behavior of their animals to gauge the danger.

It’s not unusual for Mother Nature to have other plans. Billy Butler and his wife Vickie have yet to miss a mule day since they started coming with their mule team and they don’t intend on starting now. The pair and friends rode out the storm Sunday into Monday in their trailer.

Rain or shine, Mule Day is a go, just be sure to bring an umbrella and maybe some heavy boots.
