Maury Regional Health Celebrates New Internal Medicine Residency Program

Maury Regional Health celebrated a historic milestone on August 11, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony recognizing the launch of the University of Tennessee Health Sciences–Maury Internal Medicine Residency Program and the opening of newly renovated space designed specifically to support the organization’s inaugural cohort of 10 resident physicians.

The ceremony marked a defining moment in Maury Regional Health’s 73-year history as the organization expands its role in physician education through a partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Sciences (UTHS). The inaugural cohort kicked off July 1, establishing a new chapter for Maury Regional Health and a long-term investment in strengthening the physician workforce across southern Middle Tennessee.

To support the new academic program, Maury Regional Health renovated dedicated space for resident education and daily needs. The facilities include classrooms, laboratory areas and spaces for residents to eat, rest and sleep during extended and overnight shifts. The Maury Regional Health Care Foundation provided critical funding for a state-of-the-art simulation lab, giving resident physicians hands-on experience in a controlled learning environment. The renovated facilities support residents throughout their clinical training at Maury Regional.

“For decades, Maury Regional has continually evolved to meet the changing health care needs of our region,” said Martin Chaney, MD, chief executive officer for Maury Regional Health. “As access to specialized care becomes more challenging across the country, we’ve remained focused on bringing more care closer to home. Celebrating the launch of this residency program is a historic moment — not only for our organization, but for the communities we serve. By investing in physician education today, we’re investing in healthier communities for generations to come.”

The UTHS–Maury Internal Medicine Residency Program is a three-year graduate medical education program that combines inpatient and outpatient training, faculty mentorship, research opportunities and continuity of care. Residents will train in hospital and outpatient settings, with the first year focused heavily on inpatient internal medicine along with rotations in specialties including cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease, gastroenterology and nephrology.

The partnership brings together Maury Regional’s community-based clinical environment with the academic resources of UTHS, Tennessee’s largest educator of health professionals. Program leaders say the goal is to give residents broad clinical experience while preparing them to provide care in a variety of settings.

The program also is intended to help address physician shortages in the region and across Tennessee. Physicians are often more likely to practice in communities where they complete their residency, giving Maury Regional and UTHS an opportunity to introduce residents to the needs of community and rural patients and potentially encourage them to build their careers in the area.

A new group of residents will join the program each year, creating a growing pipeline of physicians trained in Middle Tennessee. Maury Regional leaders hope the program will ultimately help bring more physicians to the region and strengthen access to care for local communities.

Want an Officer at Your Event? Columbia Police Launches New Off-Duty Program

The Columbia Police Department is announcing a new program that will allow off-duty Columbia Police officers to be hired for approved events, activities, traffic control, security and other services throughout the community.

Beginning September 2026, those seeking an additional law enforcement presence for an event or other approved need will be able to request an off-duty Columbia Police officer through the Off-Duty Management platform.

The new program provides the community with another public safety resource, offering access to trained Columbia Police officers when an additional law enforcement presence may help enhance safety at an event, gathering or other activity.

All costs associated with the service are paid by the party requesting the officer. This includes the officer’s time and any equipment or resources used for the assignment. No taxpayer dollars are used to cover the cost of the requested service.

“This program provides our community with an additional resource when there is a need for a law enforcement presence beyond the services provided through our officers’ regular duties,” said Columbia Police Chief Jeremy Haywood. “Whether helping with traffic control or providing an added presence at an event, this gives people another option to help make safety a priority.”
