Maury County Puts Temporary Pause on New Data Centers

New data center projects in Maury County are on hold for the next year following a vote by the Maury County Commission Monday night.

The 12-month moratorium is intended to give county officials time to examine how data centers should be regulated locally and whether existing zoning and land-use rules are adequate for large-scale facilities.

The commission also considered a proposal to make the moratorium last up to two years, but that amendment was rejected. Kristi Ransom, attorney for the Maury County Planning Commission, told commissioners that a one-year moratorium is more likely to withstand a legal challenge. She said the county could potentially extend the pause later if there are specific reasons that would legally support doing so.

Commissioners also discussed the possibility that sending the measure back to the Planning Commission could delay the vote by roughly two months. That could have created an opportunity for a data center developer to submit an application before the moratorium was officially in place.

During the moratorium, county officials will have time to study potential regulations and consider issues surrounding large data centers, including their impact on infrastructure and public resources.

Maury County is one of several Middle Tennessee communities taking a closer look at data center development. Nashville has adopted a temporary pause while putting new regulations in place, and Dickson County recently approved a six-month moratorium to study the potential effects of data centers.

In neighboring Lawrence County, a proposed data center has also drawn opposition from residents, who have called for a temporary halt while potential environmental and infrastructure concerns are examined. The Lawrence County Commission is expected to consider its own 12-month moratorium.

The Maury County moratorium gives local officials a year to determine how the county wants to approach future data center proposals before new developments can move forward.

The Excitement never stops as these horsepower monsters roar down the track, chasing their share of over $100,000.00 in prize money, and bragging right for a year as the "Chapel Hill Champ".
