Maury County Fire Department Asks Residents to Pause Outdoor Burning After 10 Brush Fires

From Maury County Fire Department’s post on Tuesday…

Our department has been stretched very thin the last few days with several brush fires on top of our regular incidents we respond to. Units have responded to 10 brush fires that have consumed more than 30 acres, trees, and today resulted in two outbuildings on fire with one completely destroyed.

Incident locations include: Mooresville Pike, Rally Hill Rd, Southpoint Ridge Rd, Scott Hollow Rd, Campbellsville Pike, Joe Brown Rd, South Cross Bridges, New Lewisburg Hwy, and Bell Rd.

Fire causes have included power lines fallen, a mower that caught fire, illegal burning of trash on multiple incidents, and controlled burns that spread.

With rain on the horizon, we are requesting you pause your burning until after we get some moisture. Every surrounding county is also dealing with similar call volumes and their resources have also been stretched.

See more photos from the brush fires here.

If you missed the Columbia Mayoral Forum on September 22nd, you're in luck. You can watch the full replay above. The forum, hosted by the Maury Alliance, brought together all five candidates running for mayor in the Nov. 3 General Election: Tommy Johnson, Jai Lipscomb, Stewart Parker, Ashley Townsend and District 2 Maury County Commissioner Eric Previti.

The candidates agreed that managing Columbia's growth is the biggest issue facing the city, touching on roads, utilities, jobs, housing and who should pay for new development. Public safety and the relationship between Columbia, Maury County and state and federal partners also came up throughout the evening, with candidates offering different takes on everything from first responder staffing and mutual aid to sidewalks, youth programs and preserving local land. Early voting runs Oct. 14-29, so the replay is a good way to hear from each candidate in their own words before you head to the polls.
