Historic 1930s Spring Hill Jail to Be Preserved at New Library

Photo: City of Spring Hill

The Spring Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted April 6 to accept a historic city jail from the early 1930s, donated by former Mayor George Chester Jones. The compact structure - roughly seven by eight feet - will be restored and eventually placed on public display at the city’s future library.

The new library, approved in 2025, is planned next to Spring Hill City Hall on Town Center Parkway.

City leaders say the jail will undergo cleaning and restoration work before being installed as part of the library’s historical features. The structure dates back to 1934 and once stood near the city’s original City Hall before being relocated years later.

Jones, who moved to Spring Hill in 1961 when the town’s population was just a few hundred residents, said he hopes the preserved jail will serve as a reminder of how much the community has grown - and how important it is to hold onto pieces of its early story.

Once restoration is complete and the new library opens, the jail will be publicly displayed as a permanent part of Spring Hill’s history.
