Columbia Fire & Rescue Halts Medical Calls to Magnolia Healthcare Amid Fungus Concerns
Columbia Fire & Rescue has temporarily suspended responses to medical calls at Magnolia Health and Rehabilitation on Trotwood Avenue due to infection control concerns tied to a potentially dangerous fungus.
In a memo issued March 19, Fire Chief Chris Cummins directed crews to stop responding to medical calls at the facility until further notice. The decision comes as Magnolia Health works to manage the presence of Candida auris, a type of yeast that can cause serious infections and is known for being difficult to control in healthcare settings.
Fire officials said the move is a precaution aimed at limiting any potential exposure to the organism, which can spread easily among vulnerable patients and is often resistant to standard treatments.
While medical response has been paused, Columbia Fire & Rescue will continue to respond to fire-related emergencies at the facility, including alarms and structure fires.
Typically, fire personnel assist Maury Regional EMS on most calls, but this protocol will remain in place as the situation is monitored.
