The tornado began along Highway 43 in Mount Pleasant. Many trees were uprooted or had broken limbs along the highway and interstate. A few homes and barns had metal roofing blown off.
The tornado continued northeast into Columbia, impacting neighborhoods and Columbia State Community College. Tree damage was noted frequently. Structural damage to homes was also noted, mainly to vinyl siding, shingles, and metal fascia. There was one building on Columbia State Community College that sustained roof damage, as well as fencing on the ball fields.
Next in the damage path was an industrial area along the Duck River. Many trees were uprooted, snapped, or sustained many broken branches. Several buildings lost metal roofing, and one larger metal building system had a portion of the south-facing wall caved in.
The tornado then moved back into residential areas, causing occasional trees down or branches broken, shingle damage, and damage to vinyl siding.
The tornado ended along Green Mills Road in northern Maury County, just prior to reaching Spring Hill.
An EF1 tornado was also confirmed in Lexington/Bonnertown. Read the details here.
Maury County Fire Department shared this about their response to the storm:
We are happy to report that we did not respond to any injuries as a result of the storms last night. This was due in part to citizens doing the right thing to get to the lowest point of their home.
Several homes received varying levels of damage, mostly due to fallen trees with some due to wind damage as well. Several outbuildings were toppled and destroyed.
Major Fire Damages 4,000-Square-Foot Home in Culleoka
From Maury County Fire Department’s post…
Today, 3/16, at 10:11am units responded to a house fire on Glencoe Road in Culleoka. Responding units: Engines 21, 23, Tankers 21, 22, 23, and 32, District 22 & 23, Safety 20, and Deputy 20 along with Columbia Fire Tanker 1 and Battalion Chief on mutual aid.
Units arrived to find an approximate 4000 square foot residential home with an attached garage and heavy fire conditions extending into the second floor. A deck gun along with a 2.5” hand line were deployed to knock down the garage. 3 1 3/4” hand lines were also deployed. As members transitioned inside in an attempt to cut the fire off, a significant collapse occurred and all members were withdrawn from the home. Units worked for more than four hours to contain and overhaul the fire.
During early fire operations the homeowners dog that had been evacuated initially was able to break loose from the owner and re-enter the home. Members made heroic efforts to rescue the dog with the home collapsing around them. The dog was removed from the home and returned to the property owner.
We want to commend the tireless efforts of our members throughout last night and today. Many of them were operating on only a couple hours of sleep. Today, we only had 6 personnel to fight the fire while the rest of the personal were driving tankers and pumping fire apparatus. On a house this large, with this much involvement, on minimal rest, it is a tall task to try to bring the fire under control safely. Our 2 full time personnel on shift have answered 22 calls so far with 12 hours left of their 48 hour shift.
We are proud to serve Maury County.
