New Agreement Explores Wastewater Partnership Between Columbia and Spring Hill

The City of Columbia has approved a new interlocal agreement with the City of Spring Hill that could allow up to 1.5 million gallons of wastewater per day from Spring Hill to be treated at Columbia’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The agreement includes approximately $96,000 to fund a feasibility study evaluating Columbia’s existing infrastructure and determining what upgrades would be required to transport and treat wastewater from Spring Hill. The study will be conducted by engineering firm J.R. Wauford under a contract approved by Columbia City Council on Feb. 12.

Columbia’s treatment plant currently has a 14-million-gallon-per-day capacity and averages between 6 and 7 million gallons daily, leaving additional capacity available even before its ongoing expansion is completed in 2028. However, officials noted that infrastructure improvements would likely be necessary before accepting wastewater from Spring Hill. If the project moves forward, early to mid-2027 is a possible timeframe for service to begin.

The agreement comes as Spring Hill continues to address a sewer moratorium tied to a Consent Order issued by the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation after violations were identified at the city’s treatment plant. Under the order, Spring Hill was required to implement a mandatory moratorium, which can only be lifted after the system remains in compliance for 12 consecutive months with state approval.

Spring Hill officials have emphasized that the feasibility study is intended to gather information and that Columbia would not bear the cost of the analysis. Columbia leaders described the agreement as an opportunity for both cities to explore a potential partnership that could benefit residents of both communities.

Spring Hill’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen approved the terms of the Consent Order in August 2025 and later approved the moratorium and its portion of the wastewater agreement in December.

Leave Your Mark: Maury Regional Launches Engraved Paver Campaign

Maury Regional Health is entering a new phase of growth, with major expansion plans underway across its Columbia campus.

The project includes upgrades and expanded services in primary care, emergency services, cardiology, surgery, gastroenterology, pulmonology and women’s health. Along with expanded medical services, the campus itself is getting improvements — including renovations to facilities, updates to roads and parking areas, and enhancements to the front lawn to create a more welcoming space.

As part of the expansion, the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation is inviting the community to leave a lasting mark through a custom-engraved paver that will be installed around the fountain in front of Maury Regional Medical Center.

The pavers offer a way to honor physicians, board members, administrators, retirees, supporting businesses or others who have played a role in the hospital’s growth from a 50-bed facility to a regional health system with more than 500 providers across 60 specialties.

Proceeds benefit the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation and its mission to improve access to health care in the community.

Two paver sizes are available:

• 8” x 4” — $150 (800 available)
• 12” x 12” — $300 (230 available)

Quantities are limited, and the Foundation may limit the number of pavers recognizing the same honoree. All honorees will be notified of the tribute, and donors will receive an acknowledgment letter.

Those interested can complete an order form, email [email protected] with inscription details, or call 931-380-4075 for more information.
