Tennessee House Approves Bill Allowing Schools to Display Ten Commandments

The Tennessee House has approved legislation that would allow local school districts and public charter schools to display historically significant documents on campus, including the Ten Commandments, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Tennessee Constitution, and the Bill of Rights.

House Bill 47, sponsored by Rep. Michael Hale, R-Smithville, does not require schools to post the documents but gives districts the option to do so. The measure also provides legal protections for schools that choose to display them.

Under the proposal, districts and charter schools would determine how the documents are presented, including their size and placement. Supporters say the bill promotes flexibility while reinforcing instruction related to the nation’s and Tennessee’s founding principles.

A companion bill is expected to be considered in the Tennessee Senate in the coming weeks.
