Ice Storm Drives 75% Surge in Emergency Calls to Maury County 911
As freezing temperatures and icy conditions swept through Maury County, emergency call volume surged dramatically. Maury County 911 experienced a significant spike in calls at the height of the storm, with dispatchers handling far more emergencies than normal.
Personnel at the Maury County 911 facility saw a sharp spike in emergency calls during the height of the winter storm, with call volume jumping 75% — from an average of about 200 calls a day to 351 on Sunday, Jan. 25.
Calls ranged from downed trees to residents trapped in unsafe conditions. Dispatchers, including longtime veteran Sheena Stanfill, continued responding despite dangerous travel conditions themselves.
One particularly intense call involved a woman injured by a falling tree limb, where Stanfill stayed on the line to guide the caller until first responders arrived - hear the call on the video above. The storm highlighted both the unpredictable nature of winter emergencies and the critical role dispatchers play in keeping residents safe under extreme circumstances.
