From the City of Columbia, TN - Government’s post

The City of Columbia was honored to participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Program at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and proud to issue a proclamation celebrating Dr. King’s enduring legacy.

A big thank you to the Maury County NAACP for organizing this impactful event and to everyone who participated.

Christa S. Martin commented on how the morning went: “Wonderful program at 9am, March down South Main, pause at The statue of Thurgood Marshall, pause at First Missionary Baptist church the on to Mt. Calvary for breakfast. (Thanks to all our supporters) Then an amazing service awesome participants and sermon from Rev. Holiday and the intergenerational panel. All in all a good day.”

Remembering Columbia’s Role in Civil Rights History

As part of WKRN News 2’s recent “On Tour” coverage of Columbia, one story focused on a chapter of local history that continues to shape the community today.

The report highlighted the work of the Columbia Peace and Justice Initiative, a local nonprofit dedicated to examining Columbia’s past while fostering dialogue and understanding for the future. Central to that effort is a new statue in downtown Columbia honoring Thurgood Marshall, whose connection to the city dates back to 1946, when he came to defend Black residents following the events now often referred to as the Columbia Uprising.

The coverage walked viewers through the tense days surrounding those events, the large-scale response by state authorities, and the legal battles that followed — including the eventual acquittals that marked a significant moment in civil rights history. It also explored Marshall’s later return to Middle Tennessee and how community action played a role in protecting him during a dangerous encounter.

The story then shifted to the modern-day roots of CPJI, which formed in 2015 after local leaders began having open conversations about race, justice, and reconciliation. That work culminated last fall with the unveiling of the Thurgood Marshall statue, funded through broad community support.

Today, CPJI continues its mission through educational programs, public history projects, and Justice Journey trips that connect participants with key moments in the Civil Rights Movement — ensuring Columbia’s role in that history is remembered and shared.
