Northern Lights Expected to Dazzle Tennessee Skies Again Wednesday Night

For the second night in a row, Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky residents may be treated to a rare sight — the Northern Lights.

The Aurora Borealis lit up skies across the region Tuesday night, creating colorful displays usually only visible near the Arctic Circle. The phenomenon occurs when charged particles from the sun collide with gases in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, producing vibrant waves of green, blue, pink, and red light.

This week’s display is the result of a strong geomagnetic storm, triggered by two coronal mass ejections — large bursts of plasma and magnetic energy from the sun’s surface. The storm, rated at a severe (G4) level, has extended the aurora’s reach farther south than usual.

Experts say the Northern Lights could be visible again Wednesday night, with the best viewing window expected between sunset and midnight. For the best chance to see them, step outside to a dark area away from city lights and look north.

While the display can sometimes appear faint to the naked eye, a smartphone camera with long exposure settings can often capture the colors more vividly.

With clear skies in the forecast, residents across Tennessee have another opportunity tonight to witness one of nature’s most spectacular light shows.

11/18: Columbia Welcomes Back Muletown Revue at Cherry Theater

On a map of Middle Tennessee, it's unclear where the city limits of "Music City" are drawn, but If Columbia is not included, it's time for a new census and redistricting. For all the music players and music lovers in the local area, Muletown Revue will rock the night of November 18. The live music event starts at 7pm at Columbia State Community College's 500-seat venue, the Cherry Theater. It's a chance to watch local talent and hear classic songs made famous by ABBA, Petula Clark, Kool & The Gang, Buck Owens, Starship, The Mamas & The Papas and others.

Muletown Revue is musician-approved and doctor-recommended. In fact, the concept was created by two doctors. In 2002, Steve Simmons, M.D., and Bob Thompson, M.D., organized the event as a fundraiser. The two physicians are also musicians, and both are passionate about giving back to the community.

Columbia has not had the pleasure of enjoying Muletown Revue since 2019, but the event will return to town triumphantly in November 2025. Proceeds from ticket sales will benefit local arts nonprofit Watershed Public Theatre (WPT). WPT is a professional theatre company with many different outreach programs that help educate the youth and strengthen other community nonprofits. Watershed Public Theatre also offers season after season of popular plays and performances, and serves as the producing partner of Muletown Revue.

Several performers of past Muletown Revues will return this November to help relight the torch and continue a Columbia musical tradition. Dr. Simmons and Dr. Thompson, along with band leader Hodge Cook, will be joined by the wonderful sounds of Williamsport Ukulele Orchestra and the musical stylings of many local luminaries, including Susan Callahan, Angie Manning, Michael Collins, Sherry Johnson, Scott Gaines, Hanna Miller, Sharon Frierson, Gary Grout, Meco Dooley, Jeff Menard, Adam Silverman, Clark Simmons, David Alderson, Cheri Hughes, Ashley Barnett, Jean Marie Hull, Steve Nolan, and Robert Barnett.

Each $25 admission charge for Muletown Revue will contribute to building an even stronger creative community in Columbia. (Admission is free for children under the age of 12.) Old memories meet new memories, music veterans meet newcomers on a special night, November 18 at 7pm. The Cherry Theater is located at the Columbia State campus, 1666 Hampshire Pike in Columbia.

At Watershed Public Theatre, we believe that theatre is the ultimate collaborative art and work to bring together arts professionals, volunteers, students and patrons to share in the illumination that only live performance can provide. We maintain our focus on nurturing community and practicing social and environmental responsibility while striving for the highest quality of artistic and educational experiences.
