Spring Hill Home Fire Linked to Lithium Battery Failure, Dog Rescued by Firefighters

According to the Consumer Products Safety Commission there are more than 25,000 incidents of lithium batteries overheating or igniting in the U.S. in a five year period. It is confirmed that a lithium battery ignited at a Spring Hill home on Saturday evening.

From Spring Hill Fire Department’s post on September 20th…

This afternoon SHFD responded to a reported structure fire after an alert neighbor noticed black smoke coming from the home’s garage. Engine 61 arrived in under 4 minutes and deployed an attack line on the fire while Battalion Chief Garza forced the front door rescuing the family dog. Truck 63, Rescue 64 and Engine 64 crews conducted searches, provided ventilation, and performed overhaul. The cause of the fire remains under investigation but has been isolated to a possible lithium-ion battery failure.

While this incident was being handled, a motor vehicle crash occurred on I-65 at June Lake Blvd. Our partners at Williamson County Rescue Squad handled that emergency while SHFD units were committed at the fire. Additionally, Columbia Fire Rescue and Maury County Fire Dept., provided city-wide coverage until units cleared the fire.

Thank you to all our partner agencies including Williamson Health EMS, SHPD and Williamson County ECOM for their assistance.

How do you prevent lithium battery fires?

To prevent lithium battery fires, always use certified, compatible chargers, and avoid overcharging by disconnecting the device once fully charged. Store batteries in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and flammable materials. Inspect devices for physical damage like bulging or cracks, and never attempt to charge a damaged battery.
