New Plan Targets Speeding and Distracted Driving in Spring Hill Neighborhoods
Spring Hill leaders have voted to update the city’s neighborhood traffic calming program, shifting the focus toward education and enforcement as the primary tools for addressing speeding and distracted driving. The decision came during a unanimous vote by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen at their September 2 meeting.
For years, the program relied heavily on physical changes like speed bumps and narrowed lanes to slow traffic. City officials now want to encourage safe driving through increased awareness and stronger enforcement before considering engineering measures. The hope is that by reminding residents of their responsibility behind the wheel, fewer interventions will be needed.
Much of the concern centers around residential streets, where speeding and distracted driving pose risks to children and families. City leaders noted that the drivers causing problems are often residents themselves, emphasizing that safety begins with individual responsibility.
The decision reflects a broader regional focus on traffic safety. Murfreesboro recently reported progress through its own traffic calming program, and Nashville’s Department of Transportation has identified more than two dozen streets in South Nashville and Antioch for upcoming improvements that combine enforcement with engineering.
In Spring Hill, officials said there is no single “worst” area for traffic concerns. Instead, problems vary depending on who is asked, with many residents feeling their own neighborhoods face the greatest challenges. The updated approach aims to provide more consistent safety across the city while addressing residents’ concerns through enforcement and education.
