Spring Hill GM Plant Slows EV Output, 700 Shift Workers Face Layoffs

General Motors will temporarily reduce production of electric vehicles at its Spring Hill Plant, a move that will affect roughly half of its 1,400 shift workers. The company plans to implement more than a month of downtime through the end of the year, including the week of Oct. 6, Thanksgiving week, and all of December.

The slowdown will impact both vehicle and EV battery assembly, though Ultium Cell employees will not be affected. GM also plans to scale back EV production at the facility during the first five months of 2026, resulting in temporary layoffs for about 700 workers from January through May.

The decision reflects slower-than-anticipated EV demand and the upcoming expiration of a $7,500 federal tax credit for new electric vehicles at the end of the month. Spring Hill is currently home to the Cadillac Lyriq and the electric Vistiq, two of GM’s most prominent EV models.

Despite the production cuts, Spring Hill has secured future product allocations, including the next-generation Cadillac XT5 and the gas-powered Chevrolet Blazer. GM emphasized that the facility remains a critical part of its long-term strategy.

The Spring Hill adjustments are part of a broader company-wide shift. GM is also scaling back operations at its Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas, and its CAMI Assembly line in Ontario, Canada. Fairfax, which ended production of the Cadillac XT4 and Chevrolet Malibu earlier this year, has dropped plans to add a second shift once Chevrolet Bolt production increases. The company is targeting mid-2027 to begin producing the Chevrolet Equinox in Fairfax.

Overall, GM says it remains committed to its U.S. manufacturing footprint, with nearly $5 billion in planned investments over the next two years aimed at boosting domestic production capacity to more than two million vehicles annually.
