Campbell Lake Closed Until Further Notice Following Fish Health Concerns

Campbell Lake in Mount Pleasant has been closed to the public after low oxygen levels raised concerns about fish health.

Mayor Sheila Butt announced the closure on Sunday, explaining the cause: “As a result of oxygenation, the lake has turned over. Professional Aquatic Specialists will be here to assess and advise our Parks and Recreation Department on how to proceed. Currently, the lake will be closed until further notice.”

Lake turnover is a natural seasonal process where oxygen-poor water from the bottom rises to the surface, while cooler surface water sinks. This can make the water appear murky, release unusual odors, and stress fish as oxygen levels fluctuate.

Campbell Lake, located off Lawrenceburg Highway with access from Clauson Drive, has grown into a favorite fishing and picnic spot in recent years after the county cleared vegetation around the shoreline. The closure is temporary while specialists evaluate next steps.
