Spring Hill Police Launch Safe Exchange Zone for Online Sales and Custody Hand-Offs
The Spring Hill Police Department has introduced a safe exchange zone to help reduce the risks that sometimes come with in-person meetups. Whether it’s arranging a sale from an online marketplace or coordinating a custody handoff, these situations can be unpredictable.
The designated area is located at the new SHPD headquarters, which opened in May. It’s monitored by cameras around the clock, providing constant surveillance. In addition, a newly installed emergency button offers a direct line to dispatch in case assistance is needed.
Safe exchange areas aren’t a new idea, but they aren’t widely known in many communities. Spring Hill officials decided to continue the practice after seeing its value at the department’s previous location.
Although incidents of violence during exchanges are uncommon, they do occur. By offering this monitored site, the department hopes to give residents peace of mind and an extra layer of safety.
For those who choose not to use the designated zone, police recommend meeting in a public, well-lit location with plenty of people around and arranging exchanges during daytime hours.
