WWII Veteran George Horne, 98, Throws First Pitch at American Legion Baseball Tournament in Columbia
The American Legion State Baseball Tournament in Columbia, TN opened with a moving tribute as 98-year-old World War II veteran George Horne threw the ceremonial first pitch.
A lifelong Columbia resident, Horne was drafted into the Army in 1944, serving in Germany during WWII and later spending nearly 50 years in the National Guard. He also coached the Post 19 baseball team and taught Sunday School for five decades. Horne’s humility and legacy were celebrated at the tournament, which also marks the 100th anniversary of American Legion Baseball—a program that has shaped millions of young athletes, including many Major Leaguers.
Spring Hill Debates Expanding Backyard Chicken Limits Amid Resident Concerns

The Spring Hill Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA) is weighing changes to the city’s chicken ordinance, sparking debate among residents concerned about neighborhood impacts. At the heart of the discussion is a proposed amendment that would allow more hens per property, replacing the current limit of four hens per household.
The potential change has drawn pushback from residents of neighborhoods like Hunter’s Pointe, where homes often back up to larger lots. Some worry that the amendment could lead to significantly more chickens in suburban areas, resulting in odor, noise, and decreased property enjoyment.
Complaints have already surfaced about existing chickens wandering into nearby yards and causing damage. Residents have questioned whether the current code is being properly enforced and voiced concerns that a more lenient ordinance could exacerbate those issues.
The current ordinance caps hens at four per property and requires permits for animals or fowl kept within 1,000 feet of homes, businesses, or streets. The proposed amendment would allow one hen per 1,500 square feet of outdoor space, with no maximum cap, though permits would be required from the city’s Development Services Director.
Some BOMA members expressed concern about the amendment’s lack of specificity and suggested including performance standards to ensure compatibility with neighborhood conditions. City staff agreed to explore this option and present additional information at the next BOMA meeting on August 18, when the item is expected to be revisited.
