City of Columbia Warns of Fraudulent Payment Requests Using Official Logos

From The City of Columbia, TN - Government’s post

The City of Columbia has been made aware of a scam targeting local residents and businesses. Individuals posing as representatives from the City’s Development Services Department are sending fraudulent letters and emails that include official City logos and request payment via wire transfer.

The City of Columbia will never request payment through wire transfer, and all legitimate communication from the City will come from an @columbiatn.gov email address.

Examples of the scam communications are provided here to help the public recognize and avoid falling victim to these fraudulent requests.

Anyone who receives a suspicious invoice or message claiming to be from the City is encouraged to contact the Development Services Department directly at 931-560-1530 to verify its legitimacy.

The City urges all residents to stay alert and share this information with others.

Heat Dome Traps Tennessee Under Scorching Temperatures Through July 23

Tennessee is in the thick of a brutal summer heat wave, thanks to a “heat dome” that’s parked over much of the South and cranking up the temperature. Highs are reaching the upper 90s across the state, with heat index values making it feel even hotter. Multiple communities are under active heat advisories through at least July 23, with conditions expected to persist and possibly intensify as the system lingers.

The phenomenon of a heat dome occurs when a region of high pressure traps hot air over an area, reducing cloud cover and allowing temperatures to rise rapidly. This system not only intensifies heat locally but also draws in even more hot, humid air from the south, creating a feedback loop of rising temperatures and heat-related risks.

Middle and West Tennessee are expected to experience the worst of the heat, while East Tennessee may see slightly milder conditions, especially at higher elevations. However, even mountain regions are not escaping the heat entirely.

The latest forecasts from the National Weather Service paint a challenging picture for the days ahead:

  • Middle Tennessee / Nashville Area: A heat advisory is in effect through 8 p.m. CT on July 23. Daily highs will stay in the upper 90s, with heat index levels nearing 108. Scattered storms and isolated thunderstorms are also in the forecast.

  • East Tennessee / Knoxville Area: Severe storms are expected to move in during the night of July 21, followed by a spike in heat. High temperatures will reach the low to mid-90s, with heat index values soaring above 100. Scattered thunderstorms are possible throughout the week.

  • West Tennessee / Memphis Area: An extreme heat warning is in place through 8 p.m. CT on July 21. The Memphis area is expected to reach a heat index of 111, while other parts of West Tennessee could see values as high as 115. Wednesday is forecasted to be the hottest day, with actual temperatures hitting 100 degrees.

The heat wave is expected to linger across the South through the end of July. This marks the second major heat dome to impact Tennessee in 2025, with a similar system bringing widespread heat in June.

For historical perspective, the hottest day ever recorded in Tennessee reached 113 degrees—twice—on July 29 and August 9, 1930, in Perryville. While current temperatures aren’t expected to hit those highs, the heat index in some areas could feel just as intense.

Residents are urged to take precautions, stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity, and check on vulnerable neighbors. The National Weather Service continues to monitor the situation and may update advisories as needed.

*A cooling station will be open through Friday - hosted by The People’s Table at The United Methodist Church at 222 W. 7th St. Find times / details here.
