Barrels, Bulls, and Big Crowds: 21st Annual Sheriff’s Rodeo Rides Into Columbia

Rodeo fans will gather in Columbia this weekend as the Maury County Sheriff’s Department hosts its 21st Annual Sheriff’s Rodeo at the Maury County Park Arena. The event, sanctioned by the International Professional Rodeo Association (IPRA), is set for Friday and Saturday, July 11 and 12, beginning at 8 p.m. both nights. Gates open at 5 p.m.
Nearly 400 rodeo athletes are registered to compete, traveling from states such as Oklahoma, Nebraska, and South Dakota. Many local riders will also hit the arena, all hoping to earn points on their way to the IPRA finals.
The competition will include eight high-energy events, including bareback and saddle bronc riding, team roping, calf roping, bull riding, cowboy tie down, and women’s breakaway roping. Barrel racing remains a fan favorite and will feature both cowgirls and cowboys.
This year’s rodeo will feature trick roper Lucas Maynard as the specialty act, along with crowd-favorite rodeo clown Trent McFarland returning to entertain between events.
The rodeo is not just about the action in the ring—it’s designed to be a family-friendly evening with plenty of activities for all ages. On-site attractions will include a petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, bounce houses, and dozens of food and merchandise vendors. A fireworks display is also planned for after the show.
For young attendees, the first 150 children through the gates will receive a free cowboy hat. Children under 11 are admitted free with a paid adult ticket. Advance tickets are available for $15, with prices increasing to $20 at the gate.
Beyond entertainment, the event helps fund important community outreach programs through the Maury County Sheriff’s Department, such as Shop with a Cop. Last year, more than 5,000 guests attended the event over both nights, and a similar turnout is expected this year.
To make the competition even more enticing, an additional $1,000 is added to the prize pool by the Sheriff's Department, which contributed to more than $50,000 in prize money awarded last year. Some youth competitors even qualify for college scholarship opportunities through their participation.
Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets directly from official sources to avoid scams. Only purchases made through the Sheriff’s Department or verified ticket partners are valid.
