MCFD Responds to Multiple Fires Overnight

Maury County Fire crews responded to four separate fires overnight—including two house fires, a vehicle fire caused by discarded fireworks, and a box truck fire on I-65—stretching resources and prompting mutual aid from Columbia Fire Department.

From Maury County Fire Department’s post

MULTIPLE FIRES OVERNIGHT

At 10:08PM units responded to a reported vehicle fire on Shenandoah Drive. Discarded fireworks into the bed of a pickup truck was the cause of that fire.

At 12:26AM Tanker 21 and Chief 20 responded on automatic aid to the City of Columbia for a house fire.

At 02:46AM units responded to Hoover Gap Rd on the Hickman County line for a reported house fire. Responding units: Engine 21, Tankers 21, 30, and 32, Brush 26, Squad 21, and Deputy 20. The occupants had driven to several houses asking people to call 911 for them. A member arrived within minutes to find the home was fully involved and already collapsed. Units operated for almost 3 hours.

At 04:53AM units were dispatched to I-65 at the 40 mile marker for a box truck on fire. Columbia FD was requested on mutual aid due to most available personnel operating in Williamsport at the house fire. Columbia responded with Truck 3, Tanker 1, and a battalion chief. MCFD Tanker 21 responded from the hydrant fill site for the house fire. Units were able to quickly contain the fire with no injuries reported.

Manhole Fire Causes Downtown Columbia Power Outages on July 3rd

On July 3rd, Columbia Power & Water Systems posted

We have had a fire in a manhole in downtown Columbia. Confined space protocols are being followed for safe assessment of the issue.

Some areas of the downtown square will have power restored quickly. Other areas down Woodland Street and behind Puckett’s could be subject to an extended outage while we finish assessments and make repairs.

Grateful for the immediate response from CPWS staff and Columbia Fire and Rescue, City of Columbia Public Works and other first response support. Please check this post often for updates throughout the day.

They later added this update…

CPWS crews have completed the necessary maintenance and all power customers should be restored at this time. If you are experiencing an outage, please report it on our website or call 931-388-4833.

A SPECIAL THANK YOU to Maury County Office Of Emergency Management for their assistance today with monitoring the manhole fire situation today. Their shared resources were invaluable to helping us monitor the situation while in confined space protocols.

We appreciate their willingness to step in and step up to getting us a safer and faster resolution.

A man named Chris Horne added this comment on the Facebook post…

I was driving through downtown at around 8:15 - 8:20 this morning and all of the traffic, lights were out the left side of downtown was out of power but not the right side,

After going down the backside towards Fairview Park, I noticed smoke.

I informed the workers on site of this what seemed to be an smoke coming out of an open manhole cover where that new building downtown has been erected.

They seem surprised but not to concerned.

Then I called it in..

If I had to guess someone on that job site made a big boo-boo…

I’m just glad no one got hurt.
