All Tennessee Counties Report 5% or Lower Unemployment in May

The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development has released new unemployment figures showing that jobless rates across the state remain relatively low. As of May, all 95 counties reported unemployment rates at or below 5%, with the vast majority coming in under that threshold.

Only Hardeman County reached a 5% unemployment rate—the highest in the state for the month. Johnson County followed closely at 4.9%, with Perry County at 4.8%.

Maury County saw a modest increase, with a May unemployment rate of 2.5%, slightly higher than April’s figure. Neighboring Williamson County reported the lowest jobless rate at 2.6%, while Davidson County recorded 2.8%.

According to the state’s report, 92 counties experienced slight increases in unemployment compared to the previous month, while only three saw decreases.

The statewide unemployment rate held steady at 3.5% in May.

“Tennessee’s statewide unemployment rate in May was 3.5%. Unlike the statewide rate, county rates are not adjusted to account for seasonal impacts on employment,” the TDLW said.

The next update, reflecting June’s employment data, is scheduled to be released on July 17.
