Worldwide Stages Proposes New Data Centers and Soundstages in Spring Hill Expansion
A major transformation could be on the horizon for the property known as the Northfield Building just outside Columbia. Once the home to the Saturn brand of General Motors, Worldwide Stages, which currently operates out of the site, has introduced plans to redevelop and expand the property into a tech-forward campus featuring both production soundstages and high-capacity data centers.
The proposal was shared during the June 23 meeting of the Spring Hill Planning Commission. It includes two requests: the annexation of an additional 18 acres to expand the existing 38-acre site, and a rezoning to allow for institutional campus (IC) usage.
Under the proposed changes, approximately 250,000 square feet of the current office space would be demolished. In its place, the company would build six modern data centers and four new soundstages, bringing the total developed square footage on the 56-acre site to nearly 400,000.
City planners noted that utility demands, particularly water and electricity, would need to be evaluated more closely—especially given the high cooling needs of large-scale data operations. While the site’s current infrastructure could support the initial phases of the project, additional upgrades would be essential for full development. Future infrastructure improvements from Columbia Power & Water Systems, including a new substation, may help accommodate the growth.
Worldwide Stages originally acquired the Northfield property from the City of Spring Hill in 2021 with a vision of creating a world-class media campus. Since its official opening in 2023, the site has hosted various entertainment productions and events, and a significant portion of the Amazon Studios feature film Holland, which stars Nicole Kidman, was filmed there.
However, shifting industry dynamics have prompted the company to revise its long-term approach. While the focus on entertainment remains, the updated plan incorporates advanced digital production technologies—like LED walls and AI-powered server systems—and emphasizes a hybrid model blending physical and virtual production spaces.
Spring Hill officials expressed general alignment between the company’s revised vision and the city’s comprehensive development plan. While no final decisions were made at the June meeting, the proposals will return for further discussion and consideration at the commission’s July session.Worldwide Stages Proposes New Data Centers and Soundstages in Spring Hill Expansion
