Elon Musk’s Boring Company in Talks to Build Downtown-to-Airport Tunnel in Nashville

From XPLR.NASH’s post
Elon Musk’s tunnel-building venture, The Boring Company, is eyeing another southern city—this time setting its sights on Nashville. Founded in 2017, the company focuses on tunnel infrastructure as a means to alleviate urban traffic congestion and enable fast point-to-point transportation. Since its inception, The Boring Company has completed a growing tunnel network under Las Vegas and developed a similar system beneath Tesla’s Giga Texas facility in Austin.
Now, reports indicate the company is in preliminary discussions with Tennessee officials about constructing a tunnel in Nashville. One proposal under consideration involves an underground transit link between downtown and the Nashville International Airport—an idea aimed at improving traffic flow and accommodating increasing numbers of visitors to the city.
Details such as route, length, and cost have not yet been disclosed. However, the project could resemble the company's Las Vegas system: a 0.8-mile, twin-tunnel loop with narrow, single-lane tunnels that cost approximately $50 million to build.
Nashville has explored tunnel concepts in the past. A prior downtown tunnel proposal in 2017-2018, championed by then-Mayor Megan Barry, called for a 60-foot-wide tunnel over 1.8 miles at a projected cost of $900 million. That plan was ultimately rejected by voters following Barry’s resignation.
The Boring Company has also attempted to break ground in other cities, including a proposed San Antonio tunnel between the airport and downtown. However, progress on that project has largely stalled since early 2023.
