City Council Approves Resolution Supporting Columbia Dam Project

The Columbia City Council has unanimously approved a resolution supporting the revitalization of the long-dormant Columbia Dam project. The move aligns the city with ongoing efforts to address long-term water supply needs for Maury County and surrounding regions.

The project, which originally ceased construction in 1983, is being revisited through a grassroots campaign known as Columbia Dam Now. Advocates for the initiative, including community leaders and county officials, have positioned the dam as a critical solution for regional water sustainability, citing its potential to store approximately 290,000 acre-feet of water across 12,600 acres.

In April, the Maury County Commission passed its own resolution in support of the project. The City of Columbia’s endorsement adds further momentum, with leaders from both local governments aiming to elevate the proposal to state-level consideration.

In addition to its practical value for water supply, proponents have pointed to potential economic benefits, including tourism and development opportunities. Council members expressed an interest in staying engaged with all viable options for securing the city and county’s future water needs.
