Spring Hill Battlefield Among Sites Awarded in $1.9M State Preservation Grants

The Tennessee Wars Commission, a division of the Tennessee Historical Commission focused on preserving the state’s military heritage, recently announced the Civil War Sites Preservation Fund (CWSPF) grant recipients for Fiscal Year 2025. This funding includes the Spring Hill Battlefield.
Established in 2013, the CWSPF provides state-funded matching grants for the acquisition and preservation of key Civil War sites in Tennessee. The Tennessee Historical Commission approves and awards the grants, while the Tennessee Wars Commission oversees the application and grant process.
With this round of grants, the CWSPF has now allocated $20,312,188.32 in matching funds, supporting the preservation of over 1,100 acres across 38 of Tennessee’s most significant Civil War sites. The fund can also be used to protect Underground Railroad locations that are eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or for designation as National Historic Landmarks.
“This valuable program has helped create parks and preserve open space and wildlife habitat, including in urban areas where there is significant development pressure,” said Patrick McIntyre, Executive Director of the Tennessee Historical Commission. “In addition to saving irreplaceable historic places, this program plays a key role in protecting our shared history for future generations.”
For the 2025 fiscal year, six applicants were awarded grant funds totaling $1,935,250, which will help preserve roughly 81.4 acres of battlefield land throughout the state.
Battle of Franklin Trust, Inc., received $95,000.00 for the acquisition of the +/- 11.57-acre Smith/McKee Tract at the Spring Hill Battlefield (Maury County).
Columbia to Install 12 Tornado Sirens with $420K Grant

The City of Columbia has secured a $420,000 grant to enhance public tornado safety through the 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Imminent Threat Program.
The funding will be used to install a new emergency siren notification system across the city. A total of twelve tornado sirens will be strategically placed throughout Columbia, with nine providing the standard warning sound and three equipped to broadcast voice alerts.
This initiative is designed to strengthen Columbia’s emergency-response capabilities and improve communication during severe weather events and other emergencies. The city acknowledged the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, as well as the South Central Tennessee Development District, for their role in securing the grant. Additional updates on the project will be shared as installation progresses.
