Attempt to Evade Arrest Ends With Columbia Teen Stuck in Storm Drain

A man fleeing from police in Columbia found himself trapped in a storm drain before being rescued by emergency crews.

The incident occurred on Thursday, April 3, when Columbia police were dispatched to perform a welfare check on 18-year-old Gabrielle Sheffield, who had outstanding warrants for theft. When officers attempted to detain her, she fled the scene.

Doorbell camera footage captured 19-year-old Ty Harrington also running after seeing officers pursue Sheffield. While police were able to arrest Sheffield near Andrews Street, Harrington entered a storm drain and disappeared beneath the street.

Around noon, a 911 call was made reporting a man stuck in the drain. The caller reported seeing hands waving from inside the grate and suspected water was present, though not deep.

Two hands could be seen reaching out through the metal grate on Woodland Street, not far from the judicial complex. Columbia Fire & Rescue arrived quickly, removed the grate, and pulled Harrington—soaking wet—out of the drain. The 6’3”, 180-pound man was taken into custody without incident. He has been charged with evading arrest in connection with the incident.

Maury County Marks Child Abuse Prevention Month with Downtown Display and Unified Support

From City of Columbia, TN - Government’s post

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and to honor this important cause, City of Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder, Maury County Mayor Sheila Butt, Mt. Pleasant Mayor Bill White, and Spring Hill Mayor Jim Hagaman joined together to celebrate the issuance of the Child Abuse Prevention Month proclamation in Columbia and throughout all of Maury County. To mark the occasion, pinwheels and signs were placed in the heart of downtown, in front of the Maury County Courthouse, symbolizing the community's united commitment to ending child abuse.

This proclamation recognizes the unwavering dedication of Kid's Place/ A Child Advocacy Center, which has been an invaluable source of support and healing for local children and families since 1999. It also highlights the essential contributions of local law enforcement, child protective services, and the District Attorney's Office, all of whom work tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of children in the community.

The City of Columbia and all of Maury County remain steadfast in their commitment to raising awareness, supporting victims, and preventing child abuse.

2025 Mule Kick 5k Winners

On Saturday, a record total of 758 runners and walkers participated in the 2025 Mule Kick 5K and 1 Mile Trot, presented by First Farmers Bank at Riverwalk Park, raising $69,037 — also a new record — for the Maury Regional Health Care Foundation thanks to contributions from local sponsors and racers.

“Each year, the Mule Kick 5k & 1-Mile Trot brings our community together for a great cause, and this year was no exception,” said Rita Thompson, executive director of the Foundation. “We are incredibly grateful for the continued support of our generous community sponsors and participants, as well as the hard work of all our volunteers that made this event possible. I’d like to personally thank First Farmers Bank for being our presenting sponsor since 2022. The support from this event allows the Foundation to continue our mission to serve those in greatest need across our region.”
