Columbia State Students Shine on the National Stage with Scholarships for Academic Excellence

Keira Cupp (Left) and Eveanelle "Eve" Lopez (Right)

Two Columbia State Community College students have recently been awarded scholarships, recognizing their academic excellence and dedication to their respective fields.

Keira Cupp, a Columbia State graduate and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) member, has been named a 2025 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar. Cupp, a Williamson County native, earned her Associate of Science degree in mathematics in fall 2024 and is now pursuing actuarial science at Middle Tennessee State University. She was selected based on her performance in the All-USA Academic Team competition, placing among nearly 2,100 applicants and earning a $1,000 scholarship for the fall 2025 semester.

“I applied on a whim, fully expecting not to win anything, so I was shocked when I got the notification,” Cupp said. “I'm very grateful for the award and recognition.”

Cupp will be honored at PTK Catalyst, the annual Phi Theta Kappa convention, from April 3-5 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Another Columbia State student, Eveanelle "Eve" Lopez, has been awarded a Dechra-American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) scholarship for excellence in the Veterinary Technician category. Lopez, also from Williamson County, is one of only five students nationwide to receive the $2,000 scholarship. She is the only recipient from a Tennessee college and the only community college student selected.

“Our program is so proud of Eve and her achievements,” said Dr. Julie Anderson, Columbia State’s veterinary technology program director. “Her hard work and dedication set her apart.”

Lopez, who is in her final year at Columbia State, said the scholarship will significantly support her education. “This opportunity will allow me to continue pursuing my passion for veterinary medicine,” she said.

Columbia State encourages students to apply for scholarship opportunities to support their education. For more information on available scholarships, visit columbiastate.edu/financial-aid.

March 28 & 29: Tennessee Tree Day Giveaway For Spring Hill Residents

The City of Spring Hill is joining in on the Tennessee Tree Day celebration this year by hosting a tree giveaway! Tree Day is usually observed on March 15 but has been delayed this year due to a late tree harvest.

Public Works employees will be in the City Hall parking lot Friday, March 28 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and Saturday, March 29 from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to give out free trees to residents.

Residents will be limited to 10 trees each. The City has a supply of 200 trees — including redbuds, cedars, and dogwoods — during this giveaway.

Major Upgrade Planned for Historic Carter House Battlefield Site

The Carter House, a historic farm built in 1830 and a key site in the Battle of Franklin, is set for an $8.5 million renovation, including the construction of a new visitor center. A public groundbreaking ceremony will take place on March 28 at 11 a.m. at 1140 Columbia Avenue, near downtown Franklin.

Serving as the headquarters for the Federal Twenty-Third Army Corps during the battle, the Carter House still bears the marks of the intense fighting, with bullet-ridden furniture and structures remaining on the property.

The Tennessee Historical Commission has been preserving the site for over 70 years. The new Herbert Harper Center, named after a former executive director of the commission, will replace the current visitor center, which has been in use since the early 1980s. The Tennessee state legislature approved $6.5 million for the project, with an additional $2 million provided by the Historical Commission board.

The new facility will be a state-of-the-art, multi-use building designed to better serve visitors from around the world. It will also feature interpretive exhibits sponsored by the Battle of Franklin Trust, offering insights into the Battle of Franklin, the Carter family, and broader historical narratives of the 19th century.

The Historical Commission has not yet announced a completion date for the project.
