March Lunar Eclipse: When and Where to Watch the Blood Moon

For the first time in nearly three years, a total lunar eclipse will create a breathtaking celestial display, turning the moon a striking red on the night of March 13 into the early hours of March 14. Unlike solar eclipses, this event requires no special viewing equipment, though binoculars or a telescope can enhance the experience.

The eclipse will be visible across the Western Hemisphere, including North and South America. In Tennessee, the event begins at 10:57 p.m. CT, with totality—when the moon is fully covered in Earth's shadow—lasting from 1:26 a.m. to 2:31 a.m. The eclipse will conclude by 5:00 a.m.

The deep red hue, often called a "blood moon," occurs due to the way Earth's atmosphere bends sunlight. Blue light scatters more easily, while red and orange hues travel through the atmosphere, casting a reddish glow on the moon—similar to the colors seen at sunrise and sunset.

No special equipment is necessary, but for an optimal experience, a dark location away from city lights is ideal.

Skywatchers will have to wait until March 2026 for the next total lunar eclipse visible in the U.S.

This upcoming event offers a rare opportunity to witness a stunning natural phenomenon, making it a must-see for astronomy enthusiasts and casual observers alike.
