Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. in Columbia, TN

Martin Luther King Jr. Day honors the civil rights leader and pastor on what would have been his 96th birthday. It is a federal holiday, leading to closures of many offices and businesses. While the holiday was established in the 1980s, this marks only the 25th year all 50 states recognize it together.
The day has been observed on the third Monday of January since its inception. Initially declared a federal holiday in 1983 by President Ronald Reagan, the first national observances began in 1986. Efforts to establish the holiday earlier were vetoed by Congress in 1979 during President Jimmy Carter’s administration. Full recognition by all 50 states did not occur until 2000.
A celebration program will be held at St. Paul AME Methodist Church (405 Church St) at 9 AM. A previously scheduled march from the Maury County Courthouse to the church has been cancelled due to below freezing temperatures.
Closures and Adjustments in Tennessee:
Schools: Public schools across the state will be closed in observance of the holiday.
Postal Services: U.S. Postal Service offices will remain closed, with no mail delivery.
Delivery Services: FedEx and UPS will operate with limited services. Some FedEx on-call and drop-box pickups may be available, and select UPS stores may remain open for critical operations.
Banks: Most banks will close for the holiday but will maintain access to ATMs and digital banking platforms.
Trash Collection: Garbage pickup schedules will be delayed by one day throughout the week.
City Offices: Closed in observance of the holiday.
Two Maury County Firefighters Travel To Heavy Vehicle Rescue School
From Maury County Fire Department’s post…
Two members of MCFD traveled to Florida last week to attend a Heavy Vehicle Stabilization and Lifting Class sponsored by the Gary Sinise Foundation and taught by Training to Perform Under Pressure. Members learned how to size up commercial vehicles in order to properly stabilize and lift them.
This training has already paid off for other members who have attended and we look forward to having these two members equipped with the proper knowledge to mitigate these technical incidents in the future.
Stewarts Creek High School Band's Inaugural Parade Plans Halted by Weather, But D.C. Trip Continues
The Stewarts Creek High School band from Smyrna, TN will no longer perform in the 60th Presidential Inaugural Parade due to frigid temperatures, which have moved the inauguration events indoors. Despite the setback, the band still plans to travel to Washington, D.C., as most travel expenses are non-refundable. SCHS had successfully reached its $120,000 fundraising goal, thanks in part to a $40,000 donation from Tractor Supply Company. While the band will miss the parade, there will be an alternative public performance in Washington, honoring the presidential inauguration and showcasing their patriotic medley.
