Mother and Daughter Lose Home in Hill Street Fire, Investigation Underway
A single mother and her daughter lost everything after a fire that started in a neighboring home on Hill Street spread to their house early Tuesday morning. The blaze destroyed years of work they had put into renovating their grandmother’s home, leaving them devastated but grateful to have escaped unharmed.
The fire began in a house that the family said had been condemned for three years. They claim to have repeatedly reported concerns to authorities about someone possibly living there. Early Tuesday morning, strangers alerted them to the fire, allowing them to escape just in time.
The fire quickly spread to their roof, consuming their home and belongings. The family expressed frustration, feeling the situation might have been avoided if their concerns about the neighboring property had been addressed.
Despite their loss, they’ve been overwhelmed by community support. The Red Cross and local residents have stepped in to provide clothes, financial assistance, and other resources.
Authorities have confirmed the fire is under investigation but have not provided further details.
Monday: Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

From City of Columbia, TN - Government’s post…
Monday, January 20th, is the day the community comes together to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The public is invited to participate in a march at 9:00 AM, starting at the Maury County Courthouse and proceeding to St. Paul AME Methodist Church (405 Church Street). A program at 10:00 AM will feature Rev. Fredrick L. Jenkins, Pastor of St. Paul AME. A community breakfast will be served.
The entire community is encouraged to unite in honoring Dr. King’s legacy of justice, unity, and equality.
Saturday: The Master Gardeners of Maury County’s 2025 Seed Swap
Free event for gardeners across Middle Tennessee and beyond! Bring your seeds and get ready to swap for more seeds! The Master Gardeners of Maury County will have some on hand for those who didn't get to save or buy seeds, but please be courteous to swappers who have worked so hard to collect seeds of some very nice varieties. If you come and collect nothing much besides knowledge, you'll be glad you came!
We will set up at 8:00 am at the UT Agricultural Research Center across from the Ultium battery plant on Route 31 in Spring Hill. The conference center is way in the back, just keep driving until you see the sign! Don’t use your Waze app, it doesn’t have Station Loop yet. Google maps is correct.
We start swapping at about 9:00am, and will break for a potluck lunch at about 10:45. PLEASE BRING ENOUGH FOOD FOR YOUR FAMILY AND A LITTLE MORE. During lunch, our speaker, Memra Surles, will talk to us on the subject “Color In The Winter Garden.” Memra's beautiful garden has been featured on Volunteer Gardener, and you'll be astounded at her knowledge of plants.
Due to limited space, we are asking that we limit this event to adults and older children who are swapping.
