Maury County Archives Unveils New 27,000-Square-Foot Facility on January 16

The Maury County Archives, significantly expanded over the last sixteen months, will host a grand re-opening ceremony on Thursday, January 16, at 1:00 PM. The facility, which opened in 2001 in the former Maury County Jail, has undergone extensive renovations and now boasts an additional 18,500 square feet, bringing the total space to 27,000 square feet.
The expansion addresses a critical need for more room to house every document ever generated by Maury County. With millions of records, the archives preserve an extensive history, and the facility now consolidates all records under one roof for the first time in the county’s history. The move of documents from the old courthouse will take place in the coming weeks to complete this transition.
The upgraded facility will cater to a wide range of visitors, including genealogists, historians, and students. Plans include workshops on genealogy, classes on primary document research for local schools, and sessions delving into genetic genealogy. Additionally, the new space enables the archives to expand its role in educational outreach and public programming.
A highlight of the facility is its paper conservation lab, where historical documents can be cleaned and repaired. This lab enhances the archives' ability to preserve its collection and will also offer document restoration services to other archives and private collectors.
The $9.6 million project was funded entirely through archives fees collected by the county clerk’s office, building and zoning office, and county courts. By law, these funds can only be used for the archives, and no tax dollars were used to complete the project.
The grand re-opening will include an open house with guided tours of the facility. Regular operating hours for the Maury County Archives will begin on Tuesday, January 21, running Monday through Thursday from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
