TDOT Gears Up for Winter Weather with Snowplows and Salt Trucks

As snow is forecasted for Friday, the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) is fully prepared to manage icy and snowy road conditions. Crews across the region’s 26 counties have readied snowplows and brine trucks to ensure roadways remain as safe as possible during winter weather events.

Preparations began early, with crews starting brining operations on heavily traveled interstates, state routes, and vulnerable areas like hills, ramps, bridges, and curves as of Wednesday, January 8, 2025. TDOT advises motorists to avoid driving on Friday, January 10, to allow workers the space needed to efficiently clear roadways.

To enhance response efforts, TDOT will bolster staffing at its regional Traffic Management Center. Additional personnel will monitor over 240 SmartWay cameras and dispatch HELP operators for incidents as needed. Extended HELP routes are planned for major interstates, including I-40, I-65, and I-24, stretching to the Kentucky state line and beyond.

TDOT’s statewide winter weather budget for 2024/2025 is $28.8 million, covering resources such as salt, brine, employee overtime, and equipment maintenance. In Region 3 alone, 281 salt trucks and over 67,000 tons of salt are ready for deployment. The region also utilizes 41 salt bins, restocked by three contracted vendors.

During snow events, TDOT prioritizes clearing interstates and high-traffic state routes, often requiring repeated passes during extended storms. Equipment and personnel are staged strategically to respond quickly, including tools like chainsaws for clearing downed trees.

For real-time travel updates, motorists are encouraged to check the TDOT SmartWay map and visit the TDOT website for winter weather tips and a breakdown of regional resources.

Snow Removal Routes For Spring Hill

From Spring Hill, Municipal Government’s Facebook post

SNOW ROUTES: Here's a look at the City of Spring Hill snow routes. The highlighted City roads will be the focus of Public Works crews as the winter storm moves into the area Friday.

Please note that City snow plows will not be clearing subdivisions, just the highlighted roads.

To clarify: Main Street, Beechcroft Road, and Duplex Road are all maintained by TDOT. The City does not handle clearing those roadways.
