Where Americans Moved in 2024: Tennessee Among Top Destinations
In 2024, migration patterns revealed a continued exodus from expensive states like California and Illinois to more affordable southern states, including Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina. Amid rising mortgage rates and high housing costs, Americans prioritized quality of life, affordability, and family-friendly communities when deciding where to relocate.
Key Takeaways From 2024 Migration Trends
The National Movers Study conducted by North American Moving Services highlighted several notable trends:
The overall number of movers decreased by 8% compared to 2023.
Southern states, including Tennessee, remained top choices for inbound migration.
California surpassed Illinois as the leading outbound state for the first time in over a decade.
Tennessee has consistently ranked as a top inbound state since 2020.
The most popular moving day was Friday, with August seeing the highest moving volume.
Why Tennessee Stands Out
Tennessee’s appeal lies in its low cost of living, lack of state income tax, and thriving cities like Nashville, which offer a blend of cultural vibrancy, job opportunities, and affordable housing. Nashville, often referred to as “Music City,” attracts both young professionals and families seeking a balance of career and lifestyle. Chattanooga and Knoxville also contribute to the state’s appeal, offering scenic beauty and a slower pace of life.
Economic and Housing Factors
In 2024, housing affordability played a significant role in relocation decisions. Persistently high mortgage rates prompted many to move to states where housing remains more accessible. Tennessee’s relatively affordable real estate market made it a prime destination for those leaving costlier states.
The Hybrid Work Impact
The rise of remote and hybrid work models also influenced migration trends. Many movers left expensive cities for mid-sized hubs like Nashville, where job opportunities coexist with a lower cost of living. While remote work remains popular, hybrid work models are becoming increasingly common, further driving interest in cities offering economic and lifestyle balance.
Election Influence on Moving
The 2024 election also shaped migration trends, with some Americans relocating due to political preferences or state policies. Laws surrounding key issues, including healthcare and taxes, played a role in decisions to move to or leave certain states.
Cities Drawing the Most Movers
Top inbound states like Tennessee saw specific cities experiencing growth. In addition to Nashville, cities such as Charlotte, North Carolina, and Dallas, Texas, attracted movers with family-friendly attractions, job opportunities, and affordability.
Potential Merger of Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Could Impact Tennessee
Nissan, Honda, and Mitsubishi Motors are exploring the possibility of a merger, which could have significant implications for the automotive industry and Tennessee’s economy. While no official decisions have been announced, the companies are reportedly discussing future collaborations.
Experts suggest that such a merger could strengthen Nissan’s presence in Middle Tennessee, potentially bringing increased job stability for local employees and boosting investments in the region. If finalized, the merger would position the combined entity as the third-largest automaker globally, enhancing its ability to compete with industry leaders.
Failure to merge, however, could pose challenges for Nissan in staying competitive against larger automakers. For Tennessee, this potential partnership represents an opportunity for economic growth and a bolstered manufacturing footprint.

Annual Shop With a Cop a Great Success
From Maury County Sheriff’s post on Facebook…
The Maury County School Resource Officers & Reserve Deputies held their annual shop with a cop on Friday spotlighting the results from a great rodeo this summer.
Sheriff Bucky Rowland had helpers from all over the county in the form of Deputies, Correctional Officers, Citizen Academy Alumni, TWRA, THP, Teachers, Volunteers, County Commissioners & the County Mayor to pull off the shopping at Wal-Mart for 65 Maury County students. The group descended upon Wal-Mart after watching a movie at Central High School and were met with Santa at Baker School after shopping for all of the helpers to wrap the gifts. Special shout-out to Maury County's own Shane Profitt for coming out to help in the festivities.
