$420,000 Grant Approved for Columbia’s New Emergency Siren System

The City of Columbia is pleased to announce the approval of a $420,000 grant through the 2024 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Imminent Threat Program. This critical funding, administered in partnership with the South Central Tennessee Development District (SCTDD), will support the installation of a state-of-the-art siren emergency notification system to enhance public safety throughout the city.

The project will include the installation of twelve strategically placed sirens citywide. The system will feature three electrical sirens equipped with both audible alarms and voice capabilities, as well as nine mechanical sirens designed to deliver audible alarms. Once completed, the system will serve as a vital tool for mass notification.

The City of Columbia extends its gratitude to the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development for their continued investment in local communities and to the South Central Tennessee Development District for their ongoing partnership in this endeavor. Updates on the project’s progress will be shared as work advances.

Maury County Secures $20,000 Grant for Brownfield Redevelopment

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) awarded Maury County a $20,000 grant from its Brownfield Redevelopment Area Grants (BRAG) program. These funds will help the county identify and prioritize sites for redevelopment.

Maury County’s grant is part of 36 BRAG awards announced statewide in July, funded by the Rural Brownfield Redevelopment Investment Act. This program supports environmental protection and economic revitalization, particularly in rural communities. It provides local governments and development boards with resources for assessing, cleaning up, and transforming neglected properties.

Brownfields are properties left vacant or underused due to potential contamination. Redeveloping these sites reduces environmental and health risks while encouraging new economic activity.

Saturday: Mulehouse Concert to Benefit "Shop With A Cop” Program

Foster Party of 8 is a combo band/orchestra/choir that will wow you with a selection of audience favorites, holiday music & uplifting gospel songs, all in support of Maury County’s “Shop With A Cop” children’s charity program!

The group consists of 26 members from Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, Georgia, and Mississippi. Alongside the core musicians, FPO8 features a wind section, a string trio and a harp. The Maury County Chorale will also join FPO8 for this evening of music.

From Kyle Cheek of Maury County School Resource Officers on the Shop With A Cop program:

Over the years we have been truly blessed to be able to provide a better Christmas for thousands of children throughout Maury County. I would like share with you a little bit of the joy that we are able to provide to our participants of our Shop with a Cop program. First off, the kids are chosen by the School Resource officers that are assigned to each of the county schools because the officer inside of each school every day sees and is able to identify those children in need. We choose 2 students from every middle school and elementary school. We also choose 3 students from out 3 Unit schools (K-12). We provide gift cards to 2 students of our 7 high schools.

We start by taking the kids to Columbia Central High school and we show a Christmas movie and provide drinks and snacks for all the kids and volunteers. After the movie we take the kids to Walmart to shop.

We match every child up with a Sheriff Deputy or Reserve Deputy. Every child is given $300 and most all the kids buy presents for the whole family.

After shopping we take them to another school where we have volunteers that wrap the presents while the kids are served pizza and meet Santa. Typically, we fiscally take between 45-50 kids and buy for approximately 100 kids.
