Survey Identifies Three Columbia Properties for Historic Register Listing

West 7th Church of Christ

A recent architectural survey of Columbia’s historic districts has identified three properties as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The survey, conducted by Chronicle Heritage, a resource consulting agency, reviewed 542 land parcels across five locally designated districts: West 7th and 6th Streets, Columbia Commercial (downtown), the Athenaeum, and Barrow Court.

While NRHP status does not guarantee protection, the findings emphasize the importance of preserving architectural and cultural history, showcasing the stories embodied in Columbia's historic structures.

The three newly identified NRHP-eligible properties include:

  • West Seventh Church of Christ (504 W. 7th St.): Opened in 1925, though the congregation dates back over a century earlier.

  • The Middle Tennessee Bank (700 N. Garden St.): Currently housing City Hall, though detailed historical information is limited.

  • City Gas Works Retort House (600-602 N. Main St.): Now serving as a storage facility.

In addition to highlighting these properties, the survey recommends expanding the boundaries of certain historic districts.

Proposed District Expansions

  1. Downtown Commercial District: Suggested extensions include East 8th and South Main Streets, East 9th Street, South Garden Street, and West 8th Street.

  2. West End Historic District: Expansion along West 7th Street, covering properties between Walker Street and Trotwood Avenue, and areas in the north end of the Athenaeum District.

  3. West 6th Street and Mayes Place Historic District: Includes Armstrong and Dunnington Streets.

  4. West 9th and South High Historic District: Extends to West 8th Street near Rally Hill, the south side of West 11th Street, and Galloway Street at West 9th Street.

Additional recommendations include completing an East 8th Street Historic District survey to assess the inclusion of the historically Black commercial area in future expansions.

The Maury County Historical Society (MCHS), though not directly involved in the survey, has expressed plans to seek grant funding for historical markers at significant sites, furthering local preservation efforts in the coming year.

Christmas 4 Kids Brings Stars and Fans Together for a Great Cause

The Christmas 4 Kids event, a long-standing Nashville tradition, brings country music fans and artists together for a meaningful cause. This annual event supports a non-profit organization that provides Christmas gifts to local children in need, blending music, community, and generosity.

This year’s Tour Bus Show will feature a star-studded lineup, including Chris and Morgane Stapleton, Old Crow Medicine Show, 3 Doors Down, Bailey Zimmerman, Shelly West, and Ben Chase. Nancy Jones, the widow of George Jones, will also greet fans at the event.

The 2024 bus show is scheduled for Monday, December 16, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. CT, at a new location: First Baptist Church in Hendersonville, Tennessee (106 Bluegrass Commons Blvd.)

Attendees will have the opportunity to tour the artists’ buses, meet the performers, take photos, and receive autographs. Admission is $5.00 for adults, $2.00 for children aged 2-12, and $20 for a family pass. Children under two are admitted free of charge. Tickets will be available for purchase on-site the day of the event.

Proceeds from the Tour Bus Show, along with funds from the annual benefit concert at the Ryman Auditorium, are used to provide hundreds of underprivileged children with gifts and joy during the holiday season.
