Spring Hill Airport Proposal Gains Approval from Planning Commission

The Spring Hill Planning Commission reviewed a proposal on Tuesday that could pave the way for establishing a city-owned airport near Jim Warren Road. The request, submitted by the Richmond Company for the Spring Hill Commerce Center, sought to designate part of an already-approved 706.46-acre Professional Development Plan (PDP) as an airport district.

The commission unanimously approved the proposal, granting a favorable recommendation to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen (BOMA). Initially approved in December 2022, the PDP aimed to create a high-quality employment hub featuring a mix of light industrial and commercial businesses to benefit Spring Hill and the surrounding region.

Proponents of the airport highlighted its potential to attract business investments and create opportunities for aspiring aviation professionals. Advocates emphasized that the airport could serve as an economic driver, appealing to corporations seeking headquarters with convenient airport access. Additionally, the project could facilitate flight training and open pathways to lucrative aviation careers for young people in the area.

However, concerns were raised by residents regarding potential noise disturbances and uncertainty about the airport's specific role and operations. Nearby residents expressed reservations about how the development might affect their quality of life, citing a lack of detailed information about the project.

During the Planning Commission's discussion, members briefly addressed procedural considerations as the project moves forward. It will also be reviewed by the city’s Industrial Development Board before final approvals. City officials assured that any discrepancies between the zoning documents and the Industrial Development Board's recommendations could be addressed during the BOMA review process.

The next steps include the submission of a finalized development agreement, giving BOMA members ample time for review and potential adjustments before the required readings and votes.

Maury County Fire Department Responds to Structure Fire

From MCFD’s Facebook post on Thursday…

This morning at 2:20am MCFD was dispatched to a structure fire on Akin Ridge Rd in the Williamsport Community. Responding units: Engines 21, 25, 28, 30, 31, Tanker 21, District 31, and Ops 20. Arriving units found a mobile home approximately 75% involved. The fire was controlled with two hand lines and no injuries were reported.

Red Cross was requested to assist the displaced resident.

Spring Hill Public Library Closed Until Further Notice

On Thursday, November 15, City staff members attempted to repair a threshold to a doorway at the Spring Hill Public Library. In the afternoon during the repair, it appeared there may be some structural concerns with the support beams of a portion of the building. City inspectors, along with a structural engineer, arrived early in the evening and decided that further evaluation was necessary to determine if there were any severe structural or safety concerns.

The Library was closed out of an abundance of caution and the building will remain closed until we are certain that our Library patrons and staff are safe to return. In the meantime, the City is exploring every available option to get our Library back open for all the people who use its services. We will work diligently to get the building back open and operating for everyone to enjoy.

The Library’s outside book drop will be temporarily unavailable, and all late fees will be paused until the Library reopens. Online resources are still available including e-books, audiobooks, and videos.
