Veterans Day Parade Honors 101-Year-Old WWII Veteran as Grand Marshal

Claude Hillenbrand, a 101-year-old veteran of World War II, will take the honored role of grand marshal in this year’s Veterans' Day Parade. A former gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress bomber, Hillenbrand flew 35 missions in the European Theater, including high-stakes sorties over Berlin and Munich, and pivotal bombings ahead of the D-Day invasion and the liberation of Paris. His service is marked by close encounters, with his aircraft hit multiple times but never downed.

Currently residing at Morning Pointe in Spring Hill, Hillenbrand transitioned to civilian life with a career on the L&N Railroad as a brakeman, later driving a tractor-trailer. He shared a long and fulfilling life with his two late wives, Mae and Barbara, with whom he spent 52 and 18 years, respectively. He is one of only three surviving members of the 452nd Bombing Group.

Hillenbrand’s selection as grand marshal was led by the Maury County Veterans Services office, following a suggestion from Morley Levine. In addition to this honor, he was celebrated as a guest of honor at the Grand Ole Opry earlier this year and served as grand marshal at Franklin’s Veterans' Day Parade in 2023, joined by his son, John, a Vietnam War veteran.

Learn more about Claude’s life and 3 years of service during World War II in this article on the Morning Pointe website.

👉 The Maury County Veterans Day Parade starts at 11 AM at Columbia Plaza (by the post office), heads down West 7th and turns down High St at the Polk Home and ends at the Mulehouse.
