Middle Tennessee’s Tornado Season Returns in November, Forecasted to Be Active

In Tennessee, tornadoes are most common during the spring, with April marking the peak of the season. A second, smaller tornado season happens in the fall, typically reaching its height in November.

Historically, November has ranked as the fifth most active month for tornadoes in Middle Tennessee. Tornado formation relies on the presence of wind shear, provided by the polar jet stream, and energy from warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. While the summer offers energy but lacks wind shear, and winter has wind shear but limited energy, the spring and fall provide the ideal conditions for tornadoes.

This year’s fall tornado season may be more active due to the ongoing La Niña pattern, which has historically led to enhanced tornado activity in the Tennessee region. La Niña, the cold phase of the El Niño Southern Oscillation, is forecasted to last through November and continue into winter. As fall severe weather season approaches, it's important to prepare now. Make sure you have a secure tornado shelter and reliable ways to stay informed about warnings.

TIP: The Maury County Emergency Operations Safe Space, located at 1451 Tom J. Hitch Parkway serves as a storm shelter for the citizens and visitors of Maury County in the event of severe weather conditions.

Maury County Fire Department Introduces 2024 Volunteer Firefighter Recruits

From Maury County Fire Department’s Facebook post on October 10th:

We are thrilled to introduce our 2024 Volunteer Firefighter Recruit Class! This dedicated group of community members is ready to serve Maury County as MCFD firefighters. They have successfully completed agility testing, academic assessments, interviews, and other rigorous selection criteria to earn their place in this class.

Over the next few months, they will undergo extensive training to become fully qualified firefighters, prepared to serve our county.

Congratulations to these recruits! We can’t wait to see all that they will accomplish!

🚨 DUI Checkpoints This Weekend

The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting sobriety roadside safety checkpoints during the weekend of October 18th on the 0 Mile Marker of State Rt. 50 in Maury County starting at 10:00PM .

Impaired driving is a serious crime that kills more than 16,000 people and injures 305,000 people every year in the United States. Troopers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. Troopers will target those who operate a vehicle while impaired and take corrective actions for other violations observed while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol recognizes that sobriety checkpoints are highly visible and effective tools in the battle against impaired driving.
