Temperatures in Middle Tennessee are set to drop significantly, with the season's first frost expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the National Weather Service, areas like the Cumberland Plateau may see temperatures dip below freezing, with Nashville forecasted to reach 37°F, while Crossville could experience lows below 30°F. Residents are advised to protect sensitive vegetation from frost by covering plants with blankets or row covers, especially for frost-prone areas Tuesday night into Wednesday morning and again the following night.

Rare Comet to Pass Earth: Visible in October

A newly discovered comet, C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, will make a close approach to Earth soon. Spanning nearly 2 miles in diameter, its massive tail of dust and gas stretches millions of miles. First observed in 2023 by astronomers in China and South Africa, the comet hails from the Oort Cloud and will pass within 44 million miles of Earth. Starting October 12, it has been visible near the western horizon at twilight without special equipment, though binoculars provide the best view. The comet will become dimmer by late October before disappearing, not to return for 80,000 years.

For those hoping to catch a glimpse, the comet will rise higher in the sky each evening but will be more difficult to see with the naked eye as the month progresses. After Halloween, professional telescopes will be necessary to continue observing it.
