Maury County Courthouse Shuts Its Doors to Normal Court Operations

From Columbia Mayor Chaz Molder’s Facebook post on Friday:

“Today, at 4pm, just shy of 100 years since it opened its doors, the Maury County Courthouse in downtown Columbia closed its doors to normal court operations for the very last time. Earlier in the day, w my oldest daughter, we walked through the stately structure, as a courthouse, one last time.

The magnificent building, built in 1906, has quite the history. From its groundbreaking in 1904 which included a 100+ year old former slave laying the first cornerstone, until the closing of its doors today, this courthouse and its grounds has seen a lot--of good and bad. Tears of happiness and joy, and sadness and sorrow.

But, this building stood the test of time and looked just as majestic today, its last day as a courthouse, as it did on its opening day of court, almost century ago. A site to see even still. A focal point for a historic downtown. The most recognizable building among a number of recognizable buildings in our community.

I hope and pray the county will ensure this building lives to see another 100 years. Time will tell.”
