Historic Upset: Vanderbilt Defeats No. 1 Alabama and Throws Goalpost in the River

Vanderbilt pulled off a historic 40-35 upset against No. 1 Alabama on Saturday, securing their first-ever win over a top-ranked team and ending a 23-game losing streak to the Crimson Tide. Key plays by Sedrick Alexander, who ran for two touchdowns, and Randon Fontenette, who returned an interception for a touchdown, helped the Commodores maintain their lead throughout the game. Alabama struggled with penalties and turnovers, including two costly mistakes by Heisman contender Jalen Milroe. Vanderbilt’s ball control, holding possession for over 42 minutes and converting 12 of 18 third downs, wore down Alabama's defense, sealing the victory.

The win sparked a wild celebration as Vanderbilt fans rushed the field, tore down a goalpost, carried it out of the stadium, down Broadway, and threw it into the Cumberland River. This victory, which came after Alabama’s emotional win over Georgia, marked a turning point for Vanderbilt football under coach Clark Lea, who called it his alma mater’s biggest win ever. The SEC fined Vanderbilt $100,000 for the on-field celebration, but the joy of defeating a top-ranked team for the first time in school history was undeniable.
