TEMA Responds to Donation Misunderstandings Amid Storm Recovery
The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (TEMA) addressed misinformation about volunteering and donating to storm victims, clarifying its position after confusion arose. Rebecca Smith, an East Nashville resident collecting donations for affected areas in East Tennessee and Asheville, North Carolina, encountered false claims that donations were not being accepted, and access to the areas was restricted. TEMA acknowledged that its earlier message was misunderstood and emphasized that while volunteers are essential, uncoordinated efforts could interfere with critical emergency operations.
TEMA has since updated its stance, noting that several local communities are now actively requesting assistance and have established donation sites. To ensure safety and efficiency, TEMA encourages donors to coordinate efforts with local organizations. Bristol Motor Speedway has been designated as a major donation collection site, where items like baby formula, batteries, and diapers can be dropped off. TEMA’s initial advice was to hold off on sending donations unless specifically requested by state or local authorities immediately following the storm.
Hoping to Donate to Helene Victims? Trucks are Headed East on Saturday!
Several businesses, churches and individuals in the area are collecting supplies for the victims of Hurricane Helene. Many will be delivering these items on Saturday, so if you’re wanting to donate… today’s the day! Here are some of the places we found that you can drop off and / or donate to:
We have a truck & trailer headed to the hurricane victims on Saturday. If you would like to make any donations those can be dropped off at the store from 7am-6pm. There will be another truck and trailer heading that way at a later date as well. Thank you!
We’re partnering with the Audi Club Tennessee to gather supplies and deliver this weekend. If you’re able and willing, please drop off any of the listed items this week. Together we can help our neighbors to the East affected by the storm. We will be taking donations through Friday 5pm at Colorkraft Auto Refinshers: 423 Westover Drive in Columbia. If you have any questions about how you can help or what items to bring, please feel free to reach out.
Please help if you can! So many families have been affected by Hurricane Helene. We have several organizations traveling east until October 15th.
Donate: Medical supplies, canned goods, hygiene products, wipes, diapers, toilet paper, water, etc. We will not be accepting cash.
We are accepting donations during normal business hours.
Jade Nicole Woodard and her family will be collecting bottled water between now and Friday (10/04) and will be delivering them to East TN / North Carolina. “If anyone would like to donate, please let me know and we can arrange a meet up. You can also Venmo me and we will purchase the water. Venmo-prbyjade732, Cashapp- $jwoodard732”
The Horse Tack Consignment Sale happening on Oct. 4-5 will be taking donations for those who have been affected by the floods and for their animals. Donations will be taken by Schuster Show Horses who are organizing a relief effort to haul as much as they can to those in need. Items most needed are things like pet food, horse feed. First aid supplies, water, non-perishable food, shavings, plastic tote boxes and toiletries. “We will take whatever you’d like to donate.”
Location: Baker Building in Maury County Park
Time: Friday and Saturday from 11 AM to 4 PM
To help the people of East Tennessee and North Carolina impacted by recent floods, the museum will be serving as a drop-off location for donations. Find items needed on their Facebook post. Items will be accepted this week during museum hours (Monday through Friday 9am to 4pm).
Hurricane Relief: We have identified a church out of Knoxville that is offering direct help/support to the city of Newport. We ask you to please use the church's Venmo account (@mauryhills) for donations so we can more easily track. We are collecting until Sunday and then we'll cut a check to the church. They have communicated that funds are most needed right now and will make sure every dollar goes to support victims of the recent flooding.
Local Fire Department Task Force Update

From Columbia Fire & Rescue’s Facebook post:
Task Force 7 is doing well! Yesterday, they focused on searching debris piles, and today they continue this mission. We're currently in the process of adding and swapping some team members. Together we will maintain a strong crew of 15 personnel on the ground for the next few days.
A huge thank you to the local Cowboy Church for graciously housing and feeding our team during their deployment! Your support makes a world of difference.
Columbia, Spring Hill, Maury County, Mt Pleasant, and Lawrence County Departments have worked together to fulfill some supply requests to further assist the efforts.
Please keep the team and the community they’re serving in your thoughts and prayers. The road to recovery from this devastating event will take years, but together, we will make a difference.
TONIGHT: First Fridays Downtown
On the FIRST Friday of each month, April through December, we're closing down the street in historic downtown Columbia from 5pm to 8pm for FIRST FRIDAYS.
