Tennessee Secures Federal Aid After Hurricane Helene Devastation

On October 2, President Biden issued a major disaster declaration for Tennessee in response to the damage caused by Hurricane Helene. This declaration allows the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to provide federal disaster relief to the state. The declaration follows an earlier approval for emergency federal funding, expanding the range of assistance available to individuals and public infrastructure, including support for both immediate emergency needs and long-term recovery efforts.

Federal aid will be directed to the counties hardest hit by the hurricane: Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Johnson, Unicoi, and Washington. Assistance will come in various forms, such as housing grants, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property damage, and other programs aimed at helping residents and businesses rebuild after the storm.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee had already declared a state of emergency on September 27 and requested federal assistance from FEMA, which was granted on September 28. The initial phase of federal funding provides a 75% reimbursement for restoration work in Carter, Cocke, Greene, Hamblen, Johnson, and Unicoi counties. Additionally, 75% of the costs for evacuation and shelter support in Hawkins and Washington counties will be covered by federal funds, with the remaining 25% covered by local and state resources.

On September 30, Governor Lee formally requested an expedited major disaster declaration, similar to those approved for Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. This request was approved on October 2, bringing further federal assistance to help Tennessee recover from the effects of Hurricane Helene.
