Rippa Villa Reclaims 11.5 Acres of Battlefield Land in Spring Hill

Rippa Villa, built in 1855, was one of the premier farms in Middle Tennessee. On November 29, 1864, the home and the families who lived there found themselves in the middle of one of the most dramatic events of the Civil War.

From Rippa Villa’s Facebook post on Wednesday:

It is OFFICIAL!!!

We just signed the contract on 11.5 acres of property (shaded on the map) that was once part of Rippa Villa and is part of the Spring Hill battlefield!! The tract, which is mostly wooded, is just north of the historic home and adjacent to Saturn Parkway. Confederate troops from Gen. Hiram Granbury's Brigade nearly blocked the pike just north of this, and the right of Gen. William's Bate's Division moved onto the property and were halted just shy of the pike around sundown on Nov. 29, 1864.

The tract was once owned by the Brown family, and it was purchased by Nat Cheairs on Dec. 21, 1854. It remained in the Cheairs family until early 1920 and was subsequently part of a large real estate auction that took place in Nov. 1959. We are thrilled to announce that the last piece of Rippa Villa that can be acquired, and was long ago disconnected, has been brought back home and will be part of the site forever!

If you are interested in contributing to this effort, now is the time.

We are asking for your assistance – and your generosity. Years from now, the people who walk these important battlefields, and visit Carnton, Carter House, and Rippa Villa, may not know how we saved this vital ground and these significant places. But they will know that essential pieces of our nation’s history were preserved. From there, they can learn and appreciate what the past means to them, and to those who follow them. That is what matters.

Maury County Fire Department Responds to Vehicles on Fire in Basement
