Tennessee Population on Track to Hit 8 Million by 2040, New Study Finds

Tennessee's population is projected to reach 7.94 million by 2040, according to the Boyd Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. This growth will include a significant increase in the number of older adults; the population aged 65 and over is expected to grow by 25% compared to 2022, with particularly sharp increases among those aged 75-84 (36%) and those aged 85 and older (72%).

Overall, Tennessee's population is set to increase by nearly 900,000 people, or 12.6%, from the 2022 total of 7.05 million. The state is projected to experience an annual population growth rate of 0.82% from 2020 to 2030. This rate is expected to slow to 0.55% annually between 2030 and 2040 and continue at a similar pace through 2070 due to an anticipated rise in deaths as the baby boom generation ages.

By 2040, nearly 20% of Tennessee’s population will be 65 or older, up from 17.3% in 2022, reflecting an increase of 306,000 people. The state’s oldest residents are expected to grow rapidly; the number of Tennesseans aged 85 and above will rise from over 119,000 in 2022 to nearly 205,000, and those aged 75 and above will increase from approximately 491,000 to almost 712,000. This shift will drive demand for senior-oriented services, including healthcare, housing, transportation, and personal care.

Younger and working-age populations in Tennessee will also grow, albeit more slowly than the senior population. The share of residents under 20 will increase slightly from 24.2% in 2022 to 24.4% in 2040, adding more than 237,000 individuals under 20, representing a 13.9% change. The working-age group (25-54) will grow by 296,000 people, a 10.8% increase, though their share of the total population will decline slightly from 38.9% to 38.3%.

Tennessee’s population is expected to become more racially and ethnically diverse by 2040, with about 60% of the state's growth occurring among Hispanic, Black, and other non-white residents. The Hispanic population is projected to increase significantly, from 450,000 in 2022 to 754,000 by 2040, making up 9.5% of the state’s population. While the white population will see the largest growth in absolute numbers (an increase of 354,000), its overall share will decrease from 72.9% in 2022 to 69.2% by 2040.

The Boyd Center notes that population projections are subject to change based on factors such as annual census revisions, death rates, fertility rate adjustments, and migration patterns. Detailed information on these variables and an interactive dashboard for exploring data by region and demographics can be found in the report's methodology notes.

🏐 Hustle Factory Volleyball Club Hosts September Tryouts in Spring Hill and Columbia

Are you looking for a place where young athletes can grow not only in their volleyball skills but also as individuals? Discover Hustle Factory Volleyball Club (HFVC).

Located at Hustle Factory Sports Complex in Spring Hill and their new branch in Columbia, HFVC offers an inclusive environment for girls ages 7-18 to thrive both on and off the court.

Founded in 2022 by Tim Cooper, HFVC aims to inspire and challenge players, fostering growth in all aspects of life. Tim’s extensive background, including playing and coaching volleyball for nearly a decade, informs the club’s holistic approach. His experiences range from coaching beginners to college athletes and even leading teams in international competitions in Thailand and West Africa.

“Our club is distinctive from other volleyball and youth sports clubs in that we are focused on the individual’s holistic development. While developing their athletic skills is a priority for our club it does not override the importance of character development and helping them to mature into kind, responsible and confident adults. We believe that a coach is able to connect with young athletes in a way parents, teachers and peers cannot. Our coaches are trained and encouraged to look for teachable moments and to develop healthy coach/player relationships throughout the season.”

HF Club is excited to be offering Club tryouts in TWO locations this upcoming season: Spring Hill at HF Sports Complex and Columbia at Macedonia Rec Center. From year one to year two we more than doubled in size with our club teams, going from 2 teams to 5 teams and this year we expect similar growth!

Between our leagues, club teams, private lessons and the boys program that shares our court space, our facility now works with 100+ athletes ages 8-18 years of age and has grown from a staff of 5 to having a staff of 15 and counting.

Keeping volleyball affordable and accessible is one of our priorities and we are proud to say we have not raised our club costs in 3 seasons. Over 50% of our families chose to participate in fundraisers last season which helped cover a significant portion of their athletes club dues.

Important Dates:

September 15 and 22: Pre-season Warmups. Come join us for our pre-season play date to meet our coaches, check out the facility and get in some touches before tryouts! Register Here.
