Tennessee Unveils New Driver Licenses and IDs with Enhanced Security Features

Photo: TDOSHS
On Monday (8/19/24), the Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) is introduced newly designed Driver Licenses and ID cards featuring enhanced security measures, alongside the implementation of new self-service kiosks aimed at reducing wait times at Driver Service Centers. These updates will be gradually rolled out to all Driver Service Centers over the coming months.
The revamped Driver Licenses and ID cards prominently showcase Tennessee's historic State Capitol and the state flag's iconic three stars, symbolizing the state's three grand divisions. The design incorporates intricate waves and patterns printed in fine lines that resist scanning or easy reproduction.
Constructed from durable polycarbonate, the new credentials incorporate advanced security and printing techniques. These include complex overlapping of data and graphics, as well as laser-engraved elements that reveal any tampering or fraudulent alterations. A machine-readable barcode on the back of the card lists the applicable class, endorsements, and restrictions. Additionally, a mini ghost image, repeated from the photograph, is embedded with encoded elements for automated validation, helping to combat identity theft.
Although the new licenses and IDs feature state-of-the-art technology designed to prevent counterfeiting and fraud, there is no immediate need for citizens to update their current licenses or IDs. Existing credentials remain valid until their expiration date. Citizens are only required to update their credentials if they have expired or if there is a need to change personal details, such as name or address.
The new design will apply to all types of credentials issued by TDOSHS, including Regular Driver Licenses, Teen/Graduated Driver Licenses, Commercial Driver Licenses, Motorcycle Licenses, ID Only Licenses, REAL IDs, and Handgun Carry Permits.
The introduction of self-service kiosks is expected to offer greater convenience and flexibility for Tennesseans. These kiosks will allow citizens to complete various Driver Services transactions, including renewing or replacing licenses or ID cards, changing addresses, updating emergency contact information, advancing a Teen/Graduated Driver License, paying reinstatement fees, and requesting a license reissue after meeting reinstatement requirements. The kiosks are equipped to take photos and accept payments via Apple Pay, Google Pay, or credit and debit cards.

Man Arrested After Firing Handgun During Domestic Dispute in Benevento East

On August 18th, at 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Via Francesco Way in the Benevento East neighborhood. An investigation revealed that a domestic argument between an adult male and female escalated when the male allegedly fired a handgun near the female. The woman managed to escape from the house and contacted 911. Law enforcement swiftly established a perimeter around the residence and initiated contact with the male, urging him to surrender. After a brief standoff, the male exited the home and was taken into custody without further incident. Thankfully, no one inside the home was injured. The male now faces charges of attempted criminal homicide and two counts of reckless endangerment.
